Seventh graders in Middle School teacher Erika Smith ’93’s geography class are demonstrating their newfound knowledge about natural disasters by engaging in two different types of service—indirect and advocacy—on behalf of disaster victims at home and abroad. The students studied a range of recent natural disasters, from Hurricane Irene on the East Coast to the October 2011 earthquake in eastern Turkey. Working in small groups, they then held 22 different fundraisers from November through January and raised some $3,500 for disaster relief. They will allocate the funds based on their research.
