New data from the Charity Insights Canada Project (CICP) finds that remuneration and benefits are perceived to be among the top reasons for employee turnover in nonprofits. The data was gathered as part of the CICP’s weekly survey, which was distributed on June 18, 2025. The survey focused on turnover and retention in the nonprofit sector. 700 individuals participated in the 6-question survey.

Key Research Findings

  • 34% of respondents noted their organization experienced no employee turnover over the past year.
  • 26% of respondents indicated their organization experienced a 1-10% level of employee turnover over the past year.
  • 17%  of respondents indicated their organization experienced an 11-20% level of employee turnover over the past year.
  • 24% of respondents indicated that it was somewhat difficult for their organization to replace individuals who had left the organization in the past year.
  • 17% of respondents indicated that their organization is very concerned about employee turnover.
  • 33% of respondents indicated that their organization is somewhat concerned about employee turnover.
  • 45% of respondents indicated that they perceive that remuneration and benefits could be a reason for employee turnover.
  • 37% of respondents indicated that they perceive that employees being overwhelmed by the amount of work/burnout could be a reason for employee turnover.
