The Charity Insights Canada Project (CICP) published new insights into the level of dependence charities have on government funding. As part of their weekly survey series, CICP asked charities about the level of government funding they receive and what would happen to their organization if the funding were significantly reduced or eliminated. According to the research, 75% of organizations receive government funding, and 12% of organizations no longer receive government funding; however, they did in the past. CICP found that 19% of organizations receive 85% to 99% of their total funding from government sources, while 18% of organizations receive 70% to 84%.

The research also investigated how many charities are not receiving government funding. According to the research, the top three reasons that Canadian charities (23%) do not currently receive government funding are a lack of awareness about available programs (49%), unsuccessful applications despite trying (32%), and simply not applying for funding at all (22%). The research found that if government funding were significantly reduced or eliminated, 72% of organizations anticipate that there would be job losses for their staff, and 63% predict that their organization would struggle to cover core costs.
