Seven Blessings for Considering the Poor
1. Deliverance in time of trouble.
2. Preservation.
3. Revived to life again.
4. Blessed upon earth.
5. Deliverance from enemies.
6. Strength.
7. Made to recover in weakness.
1. God identifies with the poor, how we treat them is how we treat Him. (Proverbs 14v31; Proverbs 19v17)
2. Jesus identifies with the poor; how we treat them will determine if we will be accepted or condemned. (Matthew 25v34-36)
3. Those who have opened their heart to God but closed their hearts to the poor are liars. (Isaiah 58v6-7; James 1v27; 2v14-18)
4. Early church had two main offices: Episkop and Daikon.
Episkop – oversees the word (Acts 20v28; 1 Tim 3v1-2; Titus 1v7-9)
Diakonos – oversees the charity (Acts 6v1-3; 1 Tim 3v8)
5. Helping the poor is called “mercy” (Luk 10v37) and “doing justice” (Is 58v6-10; Lev 19v13; Jer 22v13)

Injustice and oppression.
Circumstantial calamity.
Personal failure.

Relief: Direct aid to meet physical needs.
Development: Education, job creation, and training.
Reform: Social reform aims to address the root causes of poverty by changing social conditions and structures.
6. Giving to the poor is not only our moral obligation but it’s a gospel response. (2 Corinthians 8v8-9)
10 Objections to Helping the Poor:
1. “It’s their own fault.”
2. “I can’t afford it.”
3. “They’ll misuse it.”
4. “The government should handle it.”
5. “I don’t have time.”
6. “There are too many people in need—I can’t make a difference.”
7. “Helping them creates dependency.”
8. “The poor are dangerous.”
9. “There are other priorities.”
10. “They don’t need my help—someone else will do it.”
