Talk title: Interpreting Sacred Hindu texts: Case for a Hindu Hermeneutic

The Vedic Saṃhitās are first & foremost a body of spiritual-sacerdotal texts, then they are literary texts due to the high aesthetic & poetic quotient of the mantras, and finally they’ve the element of ritual performative. Engaging with such an ancient text is like attempting to catch “a ball thrown by the eternal partner/with accurate and measured swing” that Rainer Maria Rilke describes in his poetry.
In this talk, Sreejit Datta makes a case for a Hindu hermeneutic to interpret sacred Hindu texts.
Speaker:
Prof. Sreejit Datta is Assistant Professor and Director of the Centre for Civilisational Studies at Rashtram School of Public Leadership, Rishihood University. He is also a translator, writer, and a musician, with research interests in alaṁkāraśāstra, philosophy, literature, historiography, musicology, Bhakti, & Vedic Studies.
