Hindu influence in Japan spread via China in the 6th century CE and has shaped the cultural framework of Japanese society. Many Buddhist traditions and beliefs are prevalent, exemplified by the Sanjūsangen-dō temple, built in 1164 CE, which houses 1,000 human-sized wooden idols of the Deity Kannon, Goddess of compassion, and 28 guardian deities of Indian origin. The remarkable harmony with which Japanese Buddhist monks integrated deities from Hinduism is noteworthy, as Bhagavan Shiva, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Kubera are worshiped under Japanese names. The six Darshans of Hindu philosophy have also influenced Japanese culture significantly.
