The Charities Aid Foundation published the World Giving Report, which dives into insights from more than 50,000 people and explores what drives giving at a global level. The Charities Aid Foundation sought to capture the full scope of generosity around the world, and focused on the following three types of giving: direct, charitable giving, and religious giving. According to the study, giving directly to those in need is the most common way to give (38% of people), followed by donating to charities (36%), and religious giving (25%). The research also found that Africa is the world’s most generous continent, with Africans allocating an average of 1.54% to giving, followed by Asia (1.28%), and then North America (0.94%).
The Charities Aid Foundation found that high-income countries are less generous, donating less as a percentage of their annual incomes (0.7% on average), compared to low-income countries (1.45%). The research also delved into volunteerism across the globe, asking participants the average amount of time they spend volunteering. According to the research, approximately 26% of people around the world volunteer. Africa ranked as the top continent for volunteerism, with an average of 14 hours 30 minutes per person in 2024, followed by Oceania (10 hours), and North America (8 hours).
